Comunal was one of sixteen studios shortlisted for this year's AR Emerging Architecture award, which gives "early recognition to young designers and celebrate the architectural stars of tomorrow." It was juried by three former finalists/winners: Anna Heringer, Níall McLaughlin, and Sou Fujimoto. According to The Architectural Review, which has administered the award since 1999, "the judging panel applauded the practice’s advocacy for the community they work with, Anna Heringer citing in particular their fight against a political lobby that is vastly supportive of replicable, commercial housing development over housing seen as a human right."

Beyond Comunal's award, the jury named Estudio MMX (Mexico City) and Estúdio Gustavo Utrabo (Brazil) as Highly Commended practices, with TAKA Architects and Clancy Moore Architects (both Ireland) jointly receiving the Peter Davey Prize.
