The Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture is the leading educational and research institution in its field in Central Switzerland. The School offers practical bachelor's and master's degree programs and a variety of continuing and executive education programs, and also carries out applied research and development. It is one of six Schools making up the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts with its 1,600-plus staff and around 10,800 degree and continuing education students.

Effective glare control is essential to leverage the beneficial effects of daylight in buildings. Glare depends on the luminance distribution in the field of view, a function of time, location and view direction. Due to the computational effort of conventional daylight simulation, glare evaluations are limited to single point-in-time conditions for selected locations and directions. This contradicts the representative zone-based evaluation as an essential requirement of performance-driven design. The project "Light fields in climate-based daylight modeling for spatio-temporal glare assessment" (http://p3.snf.ch/project-179067) shall overcome these limitations to assess the spatio-temporal nature of glare using light fields. The joint research with the Laboratory of Integrated Performance in Design (LIPID) at EPFL and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

We are looking for a person to join the Institute of Construction Engineering (IBI) starting in on 01.01.2019 or upon agreement.

PhD student Daylight in Buildings

Your responsibilities
  • Research within the framework of a PhD thesis conducted as a PhD candidate enrolled into the doctoral school at EPFL
  • Development of methods to generate light-fields under varying illumination
  • Development of methods to evaluate light-fields employing glare metrics
  • Implementation of the methods in the daylight simulation suite Radiance
  • Documentation of methods and implementation
  • Discussion of research at conferences, publication of results in international scientific journals
  • Place of employment is Lucerne, but it is expected that the candidate is present at EPFL according to the requirements of doctoral courses and thesis supervision

Your profile
  • Completed Master's degree preferably in building science, engineering, computer science, or a related field
  • Specialization in building simulation or visual comfort
  • At least basic familiarity with Radiance is required, programming skills in C or Python are considered a plus
  • Fluency in English required, French or German a plus
