Brooklyn Museum Entry Pavilion and Plaza

Contrasting with the classical solemnity and monumentality of the original edifice, the glass entry pavilion and Eastern Parkway plaza create a new identity for the Museum. Generating principles of the design are firmly rooted in the formal and organizational strategies of the historic structure: its asymmetry, permeability and minimalism are counterpoints to the rigorous symmetry, opacity and decorative qualities of the original, and its stepped forms reference the original monumental entry stair. The hemicyclical geometry of the new entry pays homage to McKim, Mead & White’s design for the Museum’s unbuilt eastern entry and mediates between the frontality of the portico and the oblique axes of approach from the east and west.
