The train line, known formerly as the Keretapi Tanah Melayu, stretches from the north to the south of Singapore. URA calls it "a 'green corridor' that stands out as an informal public space in contrast to the dense urban developments in other parts of Singapore." Further, "It weaves through diverse landscapes, linking high-density public housing estates with pockets of private housing, business parks, industrial areas, nature reserve, parks and land that have yet to be developed." That diversity can be seen in the walkthrough video below.

The 5 teams were selected from 64 teams submitting as part of the stage one pre-qualification round. The second stage consists of two parts, per URA:

Stage 2A will culminate in a public exhibition held from October to November 2015, when the successful design team(s)   will be announced. The exhibition will showcase the submissions of all participating teams, and the public will be invited to give their feedback on the Concept Master Plan and Concept Proposals.

Stage 2B will then commence where the successful design team(s) will work with URA to refine the Concept Master Plan and Concept Designs for the Rail Corridor, taking into account the public, stakeholders and agencies’ feedback received during the exhibition period.
