In April the Nobel Foundation—the private institution responsible for awarding the Nobel Prizes and administering related symposia and other events—selected twelve architects in its competition for the design of the Nobel Center in Stockholm. Eleven of those architects submitted anonymous designs, and from those the jury selected these three finalists (listed with comments from the jury):

  • Nobelhuset by David Chipperfield Architects("The proposed building conveys dignity and has an identity that feels well balanced for the Nobel Center.")
  • A P(a)lace to enjoy by Wingårdhs Arkitekter("Its glass façade is inviting and creates close contact between outdoors and indoors and between urban life and the activities in the Nobel Center.")
  • A Room and a Half by Johan Celsing Arkitektkontor ("The proposal is a coherent, classically proportioned building that connects to the surrounding cityscape...its materials and appearance are well adapted to the purposes of the building.")

The three finalists will refine their proposals for a submittal in February 2014, with a winner selected in April 2014 at the earliest.
